Senior IT Business Analyst

Type: Long-term Contract (Potential for Extension)
Location: Spartanburg, SC 29303
Work Setting: Fully Onsite – Light local travel to offices and facilities throughout the area may be required.
Candidate Location: Candidates must currently reside in South Carolina or be willing to commute or relocate to South Carolina prior to starting the position at their own expense.

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior IT Business Analyst to serve as the discovery and analysis lead for a large-scale IT documentation recovery and cybersecurity program initiative.

This position will work directly with IT leadership, technical subject-matter experts, and organizational stakeholders to assess existing documentation, capture institutional knowledge, document current-state technology and operational processes, and identify critical documentation and process gaps.

The Business Analyst will translate complex technical and operational knowledge into structured requirements, process maps, workflows, inventories, matrices, and other artifacts that can be used to develop sustainable SOPs, runbooks, system documentation, recovery documentation, and knowledge resources.

This is an excellent opportunity for a highly experienced Business Analyst who excels at entering complex or inconsistently documented IT environments, conducting discovery, and bringing structure and clarity to processes and institutional knowledge.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead discovery sessions, interviews, and workshops with IT teams, technical SMEs, and organizational stakeholders.

  • Inventory and assess existing technical, operational, security, system, application, infrastructure, and recovery documentation.

  • Analyze and document current-state business and IT processes, workflows, roles, dependencies, handoffs, and pain points.

  • Create detailed process maps, workflow diagrams, data/process flows, inventories, matrices, and other analysis artifacts.

  • Identify documentation gaps, single points of knowledge, process risks, inconsistencies, and opportunities for standardization.

  • Gather, organize, validate, and prioritize requirements for SOPs, runbooks, knowledge articles, system documentation, and recovery documentation.

  • Translate technical SME knowledge into clear, structured source material for formal documentation.

  • Collaborate closely with technical writers, IT leadership, and subject-matter experts.

  • Facilitate review and validation sessions to ensure documented processes accurately reflect current operations.

  • Maintain documentation backlogs, status tracking, priorities, ownership, and dependencies.

  • Support the development of documentation standards, templates, governance practices, ownership models, review cycles, and repository organization.

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of demonstrated business analysis experience within complex IT or technology environments.

  • Strong experience with requirements elicitation, interviewing, discovery sessions, facilitation, and stakeholder management.

  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft 365, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, and related collaboration tools.

  • Strong proficiency with Microsoft Visio, including process mapping, workflow documentation, and technical/business diagrams.

  • Experience working directly with technical SMEs across areas such as infrastructure, applications, service delivery, cybersecurity, or related IT disciplines.

  • Demonstrated ability to analyze undocumented or inconsistently documented processes and convert institutional knowledge into structured, maintainable artifacts.

  • Strong written, verbal, organizational, and analytical skills.

  • Ability to manage multiple workstreams, priorities, dependencies, and deliverables with limited supervision.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with documentation recovery, IT operational maturity, knowledge management, or process standardization initiatives.

  • Experience documenting cybersecurity, infrastructure, disaster recovery, business continuity, or IT service management processes.

  • Experience with SharePoint-based documentation repositories and governance.

  • Familiarity with ITIL, NIST, CIS, or similar IT/security frameworks.

  • Experience within government or another highly regulated environment.

Education & Certifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Information Systems, Business, or a related field; or equivalent relevant professional experience.

  • Demonstrated experience and quality of prior work are more important than a specific certification.

Preferred Certifications:

  • CBAP

  • CCBA

  • PMI-PBA

  • PMP

  • ITIL Foundation

  • Comparable business analysis, project management, or IT service management certification

Certifications are preferred but will not substitute for demonstrated experience and strong work products.

Interview Process

Candidates should be prepared to provide sanitized examples of previous business analysis deliverables, which may include:

  • Process maps

  • Workflow diagrams

  • Requirements documents

  • Current-state assessments

  • Inventories

  • Matrices

  • Comparable business analysis artifacts

The interview process will include a resume and work-product/portfolio review followed by one panel interview with IT leadership and key subject-matter experts.

The quality of the candidate's work samples and their ability to explain how those deliverables were developed will be important factors in the selection process.
