Senior Java Developer – Application Modernization & Legacy Systems Location: Remote (Texas-Based Client) Position Type: Contract Industry: Energy / Government / Regulatory Technology Overview We are seeking a highly analytical and experienced Senior Java Developer to support enterprise application modernization, code analysis, and system documentation initiatives within a large-scale regulatory environment.
This role is ideal for a developer who enjoys understanding complex systems, reverse engineering business logic, and helping bridge the gap between technical and business teams. The selected candidate will work closely with Business Analysts, Architects, and Stakeholders to analyze existing Java applications, document system functionality, and support modernization planning efforts.
Candidates with experience supporting Oil & Gas, Government, Public Sector, Utilities, or other highly regulated industries are strongly preferred. Key Responsibilities
Application Analysis & Modernization
Analyze existing Java applications to understand:
Business rules
System workflows
Data flows
Integration points
Review and reverse engineer legacy and modern Java applications
Identify reusable business logic and system dependencies
Support application modernization and migration initiatives
Assist in understanding and documenting legacy system functionality
Development & Technical Support
Develop, enhance, and maintain enterprise Java applications
Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues
Support application testing, deployments, and production support activities
Participate in release planning and code deployment support
Assist with application enhancements and defect resolution
Documentation & Requirements Support
Create and maintain:
Functional Specifications
Technical Design Documents
Process Flow Diagrams
Data Mapping Documentation
Translate technical functionality into business-friendly documentation
Validate requirements against existing system behavior
Support knowledge transfer and system understanding initiatives
Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
Partner closely with:
Business Analysts
Developers
Architects
Project Managers
Business Stakeholders
Explain technical functionality in business terms
Participate in architecture, design, and modernization discussions
Support planning efforts through technical analysis and recommendations
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or related field
8+ years of Java development experience
Strong expertise with:
Core Java
Spring Framework / Spring Boot
REST APIs
Struts Framework
PrimeFaces
EJB
Java EE Design Patterns
Experience with:
Oracle, SQL Server, or similar relational databases
Bitbucket or other version control platforms
Unix/Linux environments
Bash and/or Korn Shell scripting
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities simultaneously
Ability to support occasional evening and weekend deployments
